About Blue Bear Flutes

Blue Bear Flutes reflects our passion for arts and crafts, rooted in our family heritage. Our name, Mato-Toyela, means “Bear-Blue” and represents our identity and connection to our traditions. The bear is an important symbol in many Native American cultures, associated with healing, strength, and knowledge of medicinal plants. We are enrolled members of the Cherokee Aniyunwiya tribe. Each flute is handcrafted and reflects our cultural background and commitment to the craft.

What Is the Best Flute for a Beginner?

Blue Bear recommends 5-hole Beginner Native American flutes. They are affordable, easy to maintain, and easy to play. For a lower tone, A, G, or F# are good options. If another flute interests you more, that is also a good choice. It is best to choose what inspires you.

Why Are Most Blue Bear Flutes 5-Hole Flutes?

Historically, Native Americans made 4-hole, 5-hole, and 6-hole flutes across the Americas. No single tribe used only one type. Some tribes used certain styles more often, but all types were made and used.

Why Do Blue Bear Flutes Have Rounded Mouthpieces?

Mouthpiece design varies by maker. Our open-style mouthpieces are based on original river cane flute designs. Rounded mouthpieces also help delay the wetting-out process common in woodwinds. This design has been used historically and remains effective.

Does Blue Bear Make All His Flutes Himself?

Yes. Flutes are made by me, Charlie Mato-Toyela, my wife Jessie, and sometimes with help from our children. Every flute is checked and tuned by me before shipping. Accessories such as amps, bags, and books are designed by me but produced by others to our specifications. Our flutes however are all Native American Made: my family and I are members of the Cherokee Aniyunwiya Nation, a historically located Guntersville (Creek Path) and Marshall County Alabama State Recognized Tribe.
